Atlanta’s own Chamber Cartel and soloists of Ensemble Fa, a Paris-based contemporary music ensemble, will present an evening of contemporary music featuring the world premieres of commissioned works of French composer Philippe Hurel and Georgia composer Nickitas Demos.
The evening program will include:
- World premiere of Trois études pour Atlanta by Philippe Hurel for flute and percussions
- World premiere of Nickitas Demos’ Inconsequential Intricacies for two flutes (doubling piccolo, alto & bass), Bb clarinet & percussion
- Works by Pierre Boulez and Salvatore Sciarrino
In parallel with the concert, the musicians and Philippe Hurel will offer a public rehearsal followed by a a round table discussion of contemporary music.
The musicians will also offer a master class at Georgia State University’s School of Music.

Chamber Cartel is an ensemble of gifted musicians dedicated to finding the rare, wonderful, imaginative, and beautiful in Contemporary Chamber Music. Based in Atlanta, the ensemble has been hailed as “the darlings of Atlanta’s [New Music] scene” and “contemporary classical heavyweights” by the Goat Farm Arts Center. Having a flexible instrumentation, Chamber Cartel has performed over sixty concerts of unique programming since 2012 and commissioned twenty new works.
Ensemble Fa, created in 1987 by the French Institutes in Bonn and Bremen, under the musical direction of Dominique My has commissioned and premiered new works, as well as performing works by over 70 different composers. The Ensemble Fa has been invited to major festivals such as Musica Strasbourg, Biennale de Venise, Théâtre du Châtelet, Ars Musica Bruxelles, Archipel Genève, Ultima Oslo, Festival d’Automne à Paris, Guggenheim Museum New York, etc. Their first CD received the Grand Prize of the Académie Charles Cros.
French composer Philippe Hurel is mostly known for his orchestral and chamber works that have been performed around the world under the baton of maestros such as Pierre Boulez,, Kent Nagano… Hurel studied composition at the Paris Conservatory and his creations have been praised and distinguished: residency at the Villa Médicis in Rome, the Förderpreis der Siemens-Stiftung in Munich, the Best New Commission of the Year Award from the Society of Authors , Composers and music publishers (Sacem), one of the world’s leading copyright collecting societies… Hurel’s teaching opportunities include the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) and the Lyon National Conservatory.
Nickitas Demos (b. 1962) is an acclaimed composer whose critics describe his music as “compelling” and “evocative”. His commissions include works for the Cleveland Orchestra, Atlanta Ballet, Nashville Chamber Orchestra… His numerous awards include: Finalist for the American Prize in Composition, MacDowell Artist Colony Fellowship Residency, Delta Omicron Foundation Thor Johnson Memorial Commission, Ernest Bloch Music Festival Composers Symposium… Professor of Music Composition and Coordinator of Composition Studies at the Georgia State University School of Music, Demos is the Artistic Director of the neoPhonia New Music Ensemble and serves on the Artistic Board of the SoundNOW Music Festival.
